Re: Update at my Colony

Hi James,

Congratulations on another great season! You've must of fledged already well over 120 young, with still more to go. That is something!

Re: Starlings vs Martins

Hi Carlton,

I had the same problem a few years ago. All I did was make the porches flush with the holes, and that kept them out.

I was astonished Friday morning!

I was running late for work, but I wanted to check out the Martin house in the front yard for a few seconds. What I saw really amazed me, and it caused a further delay in my haste to get to my job! I live in the most densely populated county in Florida, called Pinellas. It has over 3,300 people per ...

Re: Martin Season is Near

We are having the warmest fall season on record in Florida. I would not be surprised, if the Martins started showing up much earlier than last year!

Hi Bobby G,

I have all my SREH's about flush with the holes. Before I made this modification, I had numerous breaches with porches 1/4 inch below the hole, especially with the smaller female starling, including Excluder II holes!

Hi Birdy Girl, If you install 4X4 inch fencing around your compartments, it will greatly reduce successful hawk attacks. My fencing is placed 9 to 12 inches in front of each hole. It is much harder for hawks to make a kill of an adult Martin in full flight. They seem to make a lot of their attacks o...

Don't use a glue trap, unless you make the entrance to the compartment smaller so a Martin cannot get in!

Hi Steve,

I was wondering if you do any amount of nest checks with a colony that big? Since you had a lot of dead young after the cold weather, were you able to remove them from the compartments or do the parents just renest over the expired young?

Very interesting! It indicates that there must be a shortage of good housing sites in your area. I hope the Martins can successfully fledge their young from those light fixtures!

If your stovepipe predator guard has a seam on it, then the snakes will use that crease to hold on, and breach the guard. You can run a strip of plastic package sealing tape over the seam, and then the snakes cannot cling to it. Do not press the tape down around the screw heads or it can create anot...

Hi Carlton,

I have used plastic white molding from the hardware store that is about a 1/4 inch thick and 2 inches wide. You can attach it with caulk. If it is above the hole, you can just file it down a little. My housing is Starling-proof with flush porches.
