Re: Purple Martin Status Report...May 8, 2017

Hey Otee, I believe Arkansas has a good purple martin population and there are some large colonies located there. Sounds like you have a good location with plenty of insects. I believe your colony will continue to grow. I use both houses and gourds and usually have better occupancy levels in gourds....

Re: Purple Martin Status Report...May 8, 2017

Hey Rodger, Glad you like the photos. I try to take a series each time I post on the Forum. Our martin colonies are doing well except for some worry about the drought we are experiencing. Every rain system that has come through has missed our area! The poor folks south and north of us have had flood...

Re: Purple Martin Status Report...May 8, 2017

Hey Toy, I believe the weather has been the main factor in possible martin declines in the north. It has been brutal! This is the third year that we have had cold weather during the last of April and first of May. In 2015, cold wet weather during the first of May caused the death of many early nestl...

Purple Martin Status Report...May 8, 2017

Purple Martin Status Report…May 8, 2017 The 2017 purple martin season is turning out to be a rather odd one relative to ASY and SY migration patterns in our colonies (mine and my neighbor Bob’s site) in northwest Louisiana. The ASY migration started with larger returns than normal in February, March...

Re: Is this it???

Hey Sharon,

Wonderful news! Thanks for sharing this with us!

Since the martins spent the night together and are staying around your colony, that is a good sign the martins are possibly becoming bonded to the site.

Please keep us posted on how things are going!

Re: Great Sunday

Hey James,

Man, that is great news! I sure hope they stay and bring more martins to colonize your new site.

Are there established martin colonies near you? If so, have you had a chance to check them out to see how things appear to be going?

Please keep us posted!

Re: Purple Martin Update...April 11, 2017

Just a short update...

A wave of SY martins have arrived including a number of single males and they are fighting the dominant ASY males which are still controlling multiple cavities. I have picked up a few SY pairs now. We still have single ASY males trying to move in.

Re: Purple Martin Update...April 11, 2017

Hey April, Glad you enjoy the martin update! For several years I have had martins fly low across the road to feed over in a nearby pasture when the martins have young to feed. The martins would often fly directly in front of cars/trucks and usually pulled up and escaped, but some martins were killed...

Purple Martin Update...April 11, 2017

Purple Martin Update…April 11, 2017 Our two personal purple martin colonies, mine and my neighbor Bob’s site, in northwest Louisiana continue to do well and ASY martins are still arriving and fighting to acquire territory. SY martins are now arriving in larger numbers and I finally got my first SY m...

Re: More Purple Martins Arriving And Most Are ASYs

I have never had any tree swallows visit the martin houses/gourds. We do see a few migrate over but none show any interest in our colonies. There have been a few cases of tree swallows nesting in parts of north Louisiana near large lakes. Tree swallows seem to be slowly moving their breeding range s...

Re: Some Morning Photos Of My Purple Martin Colony

Hey Foxie, Thank you for those kind comments! Having a large super martin colony is a lot of work but many martins are fledged each season and these often go to other colonies and even start new ones. All my gourd racks are commercial ones. I wish I had the skills to build such well designed gourd r...

Re: More Purple Martins Arriving And Most Are ASYs

Hey Spiderman, Every evening now we are seeing a flock of martins arrive to try to roost with our permanent residents; I believe many of these are just migrants looking for a place to sleep. Today I saw more SYs and the flock this evening was a mixture of ASYs and SYs. It is time for SYs to start ar...

More Purple Martins Arriving And Most Are ASYs

More Purple Martins Arriving And Most Are ASYs It is first week in April and this normally heralds the beginning of the return of SY martins to our colonies in northwest Louisiana. Well, I have seen a few SY males and saw the first one on April 1. But what I am seeing in our two personal martin colo...

Re: Two Exciting (One Also Terrifying) Events So Far Today

Well today at around 11:00 am our martin colonies had an unwelcomed visitor. My mourning dove decoys are getting a good workout this year! A Cooper's hawk made a low level attack on Bob's colony from the north and the hawk just couldn't resist hitting not just one dove decoy but at least two! All th...

Re: Some Morning Photos Of My Purple Martin Colony

Hey Tor, I have used bird netting below and above the winch depending on high the winch is located on the pole. Most of my winches are lower down so I place the netting above the winch. Sometimes the netting does interfere with the winch handle but I just hold the netting up as I raise/lower a syste...

Re: Two Exciting (One Also Terrifying) Events So Far Today

Hey Spirderman, I really like the Buteos such as the red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks. Both are great rat snake catchers and when I lived in Florida, I have seen big rat snakes hanging from the talons of red-shouldered hawks. Neither is much of a threat to martins, particularly the adults. Howeve...

Re: Some Morning Photos Of My Purple Martin Colony

Hey Birdman, Thank you for that nice comment! I hope the martins like me as I try to take good care of them! I ordered some of my bird netting through the Amazonsmile program where the PMCA gets a small donation from my purchase; Amazon has various bird netting packages. I have also bought bird nett...

Re: Some Morning Photos Of My Purple Martin Colony

Purple Auburndale, I am glad my advice was helpful. I have used many natural gourds in the past but no longer do so. Just too much maintenance! But I will always like the naturals and started using them way back in the mid 60s at my boyhood martin colonies in Florida. There are some great plastic go...

Two Exciting (One Also Terrifying) Events So Far Today

Two Exciting (One Also Terrifying) Events So Far Today Well I have had two exciting events today so far. First, I finally saw a SY male purple martin at my colony, April 1, 2017. He was rather shy as expected but did fly around several gourd racks. Then he became bolder and even had an altercation w...

Re: Purple Martin Status Report For March

Hey Mike, I am glad you like the photos and status reports. I try to provide periodic updates about my martin colony. Rat snakes seem to be declining in population in our immediate area. I started my colony in 2005 and have only trapped two black rat snakes and they were HUGE. My neighbor Bob has be...
