Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

flyin-lowe is correct, I’m using Flickr and it works ok. Somewhat of a pain in the butt to get set up and use, although it is currently free (both logo and real money) so that makes it worlds better than photobucket at the moment. I still haven’t figured out how to share video, although that might b...

Re: Satan's pet bird

We must have the most martin friendly kingbirds around. There are two pair of western and one of eastern kingbirds in the yard here, and they’ll hang out with the martins regularly on various perches. And they are great for hawks, and ravens, crows and even the occasional grackle gets run off too.

Re: Repeating sparrow trap

Yeah, sometimes they will show no interest in an empty trap for a week or more and then you'll look out and there'll be a half dozen in there. If they have lots of other food sources it's tough to attract them, but once the first one is in the rest will eventually follow.

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

Well, things are slowing down and getting a bit quieter around here. There are three nests yet to fledge, and 22 new martins have already taken their first flight. 2 nests with 4 eggs each simply failed to hatch, but the pair in #6 had another clutch of three that hatched after their first attempt f...

Re: Repeating sparrow trap

I have mine set up near a ground bird bath which helps draw them in on these hotter days. The best bait by far are a couple of fledgling/juvenile HOSP in the trap, and I just use some cheap bird seed mix in the bait tray as they aren’t particularly picky and seem to go after almost anything. I’ve tr...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

What an inspiring post from 0 to 12 in one year. Congrats. I know we all have a lot to do in summer, but if you can find the time, I might suggest you take your sparrow catching prowess down to Golf Coarse and change the trajectory of that colony. A sign on that house, "looking for a Keeper" might ...

Gotham, you get bonus points for perseverance, that's for sure! You'll get him eventually, just hang in there. I had a particularly evasive male that I finally got with a .22 rimfire as he was looking out of a tree swallow box. I had to call in a crime scene clean up crew to take care of the ...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

The lone nest of barn swallows is getting ready to go. I really need to build some more shelters for these, as they're just great to have around. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48302267566_4bae016773_c.jpg And this is the only nest of western kingbirds I've found, although there are two pair, p...

I think this fluffy little fellow is fresh out of #9... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48302453326_90bf125c2f_c.jpg In other parts of the yard things have really been happening. 5 tree swallow boxes all fledged out, so there are 28 more little mosquito eaters cruising around. https://live.stati...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

Thanks all! It's been fun watching the birds this year so far, with a few little challenges. We did a couple of nest changes due to blowfly larva, and spritzed a few compartments and the outside of the house with sevin due to a mite outbreak, but otherwise they're all doing great as far as we know. ...

Beetles?

During today’s nest check we saw quite a few beetles in one compartment, and a couple in some others. They mostly seem to be outside the nest tray, but that could also be because we’re moving things around I suppose. They move pretty quick, and we’re wondering if we should vacuum them out, leave the...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

And then there were 10. Somehow another pair snuck in and laid eggs while I wasn’t watching. I guess what I thought was a practice nest, wasn’t. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48115496037_576bce80a0_c.jpg And Percy is officially a father, with a couple hatching yesterday in #2. And the p...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

Well, we did it! We have helped contribute to the creation of...kinda ugly miniature martins. But they’re sorta cute. Almost, if you squint just a little. But anyways, another milestone reached! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48095480261_63c61188de_c.jpg And due to a nice slow soaker of a rain ...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

Heh, so I didn’t see any straw or other nesting material when I glanced in the hole of #12 the first couple of checks and didn’t open it up to really look inside. We did see a pair taking a few leaves in the other day so figured we’d see what they were using to build their nest during the last check...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

Thanks Archer! I don’t *think* it’s another species, as I haven’t seen or heard a sparrow or starling in weeks (except for the ones in the traps). I thought initially from the blood she had a problem with her egg laying mechanism, but then she had 3 more after that. It might be a SY alright though, ...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

So a week ago we found a couple of eggs with blood on them in compartment #6. Of course this is one that faces away from the house so it isn't easily seen from the house, but we could see a pair coming and going and they both seemed fine. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48075859423_0d869fa97b_c....

It looks like thy've taken about 1/3 of their nest material back out, which is a good thing as there was no room in there before. 6 eggs here. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48033365508_7e9e2b35ec_c.jpg And in another part of ...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

It looks like 14 martins are staying here now. It's hard to get a count, but they were all sitting pretty yesterday and I thinks that's the final number. Egg laying is continuing, and we're now up to 4 nests with potential martins in them. Noticed quite a few different nest building techniques as I ...

Thanks for sharing your pic's ...Wish i knew the secret on how to share pics because it brings so much life to a post. I use Flickr.com to host and share pictures. It’s not too bad to use after a few times, although not as simple as facebook by any stretch. I have inserted images directly on the fo...
