Re: Anyone have an explanation?!

JB, That house sparrow could be the culprit of all your problems. They are sneaky and mean. You may have seen it around a few times but, when you're not paying attention or unable to watch the colony, he'll be in there fighting with the Martins, breaking their eggs and killing young. They are very v...

Nice video. I'll bet that's an awesome sight and experience in person.

Thanks for posting it.

Re: dark cavities

DC, What type of cavities do you have? Gourds or house? I use Troyer Horizontals and S&K BO 11 Plus gourds. I found that, with these gourds, I do not have to alter the interior for darkness. Specially the BO11 Plus gourds since they have a black inner shell. This black inner shell also helps regulat...

Sky, "This second one, I'm at a loss since he can't fly and is not releasable. I've struck out with the two bird rehabbers near here - will try Austin and Houston next." I have one in the same condition. Actually had two. I have one now in a box on a perch who is eating crickets. The other one was p...

Re: Waiting For Babies To Fledge

RJM, They do look a bit hard pressed to get out of the crescents but they get over it real quick. You are just watching them learn. It takes a little bit of time but, in the end, the desire to get out and fly will educate them real quick on how to negotiate the opening. If they come home to roost af...

Scott,

What radar were you looking at to see the roost?

Thank you,

Re: roost sites

Farm, i had not seen a roost in the Dallas area however, last year I saw a huge congregation of Martins on Cedar Creek Lake. I don't know if they were roosting there but that's the largest flock of Martins I ever saw. It was early in the afternoon when I saw them so they weren't actively going to ro...

Re: Brand new - could use advice on housing

I would keep a close eye on the perch rod issue. I'm looking at it and trying to imagine a Martin squeezing in between the rod and the entrance. Looks like theres only an inch or so between them. A full grown Martin is 6 inches in length and may have a hard time getting between the two. So keep an e...

Re: make wood house or purchase gourd?

Jeff, I've had great success with the Horizontals and the S&K BO 11 Plus gourds. As I mentioned, I am adding the Verticals for next year so I don't yet have any experience to share with you on those. You can't go wrong with the Horizontals or the BO 11 Plus gourds with tunnels. I like to have a bit ...

Re: Update / feedback welcome

Lisa, Go ahead and clean things out but if you have pre-nest material add it back in and put the house back up. It is my opinion the visitors are looking to see if there was any nesting in these sites and may be scouting out a place to return to next year. That's just a guess so maybe some more expe...

Way to go Diane.

Frame that picture and hang it in your kitchen. What a great, proud, story you can tell when someone looks at that picture with a perplexing glaze on their face.

Re: make wood house or purchase gourd?

Jeff, As you do your research, look into the Troyer products as well. They have many different options when it comes to gourd racks. I have the S&K fountain rack with 16 gourds on a 2 inch square pole they provided. The square pole is much better than the triangular or any round pole. I welded the j...

Re: New to site, questions...

I'll defer to the members up north to answer the first question. It is rare that Martins have more than one brood per year however, some members in Florida have seen a few pairs who had two broods. Some paris who have been displaced from their current housing may try to nest again somewhere else. Th...

Re: Great success

Duke, That's great. This is pretty late in the year for Corpus to still have Martins with broods based on what I've read on here over the years. It's almost as if there was a late rush of SY birds and they are determined to have broods because my two last pair are SY birds. I posted in Lisa's thread...

Re: New to site, questions...

EC, One thing I took note of is this: " The male checked out the house several times and made quite a fuss over it until... our resident King Bird came to investigate. A scrap ensued resulting in the male Martin being driven off." I don't know enough about King Birds to advise on what to do but if y...

Re: Have they already left?

This has been a crazy year for my colony. By this time all of my martins have left however, I still have two SY pairs with some to fledge. You'll see in my tagline that I've already counted fledglings so I'll add these when they fledge next week. They are all very healthy. I still have a small happy...

That's the coolest thing ever. Go catch him and keep him forever.

Better yet, next year someone here will be able to post they have an albino SY bird. Now that would be cool.

Re: Fantastic year with huge increases!

Definitely a good year.

I went from 4 pair last year to 15 pair this year. On top of the increase in pairs at my colony, I've been inundated with visitors all season. If everything holds through next year I may double up again.
