Re: jumpers and it's not hot

Wow, did something change? I thought it was illegal or something to use sevin. Long time ago when we quit using diatomacious earth and this subject came up and someone private emailed on this subject. I guess it's in the open. I know when I take birds to wildlife rehabber she dusts the actual birds ...

Eggs not hatching, Hawks?

I have several more than usual of nests with eggs that are not hatching, and probably wont. It seems like I'm having fewer hawk attacks than usual. Usually I see some evidence like feathers on ground etc and have seen very little. I am working a 1/2 time job and even spending more time at home than ...

Re: Hawk took a martin

I wondered the same thing when I found a dead adult male in with #5 5 day old babies. One went missing or was eliminated but the other 4 are fat and happy and a day or two from fledging.
I am pleased.

Re: Advice please, I don't know what to try next.

Once the nesting material is nice and thick and eggs present, I place a black rat trap in there and have been very successful. First time in 25 years with ZERO HSP. I've also tried, and might work for you, is to set up a live bird trap withing 10 feet of bottom of poles and used that maise bird seed...

jumpers and it's not hot

. I had three on ground Sunday and it was 86. One was prob 1/2 the size of the rest of his gourd and I wondered if his parents "eliminated him" another had a big round belly and I thought the same, he was dead when I found him. The other was about 22 days old. I had another 23 day old out today. Is ...

Re: Nest check bonanza and approach to Cowbird egg?

Must have had a lot of new arrivals, I now have 53 nests out of 72 cavities. I did not see the comments about how to neutralize Cowbird egg and had removed it. There are now 6 babies about 5 days old so I guess Cowbird didn't run a followup visit. Did have a single nest of 5 eggs with zero now. Worr...

Re: Dead martins in my gourds

I just had a dead mature Male looked completely comfortable. No marks, no trauma just laying next to six eggs that I had just checked a few days before Also had a dead Male a few weeks ago just laying on the ground dead about 60 feet from racks. Strangely went out 6 hours later and about 10 feet fro...

First time I've ever been sparrow free, new approach

I have a suburban location and always have trouble with HSP. I used to tear out nests, worthless maneuver. Then tried trapping with door trap. I do not like pulling out and then having to kill them. Have 1/2 troyer horizontal and 1/2 Bo11 Door trap works better on Troyer. But then I found a Rat trap...

Nest check bonanza and approach to Cowbird egg?

We had some cooler weather and was leaving racks alone, finally did a nest check and was shocked at my egg counts. Out of a total of 33 nests there were 3 with 7 eggs. I usually have one about every other year. There were also another 10 with 6 eggs. What in the world is going on? Just mature birds?...

Hawk update

Thanks for everyone who helped me last fall. I moved my three gourd racks about 30 feet east, closer to garage and further from trees that keep growing. Seems to have worked. Hard to count but seems like there are more birds this year and haven't seen hawk attack evidence. We also had a very mild wi...

Re: Housing placement advice please

Thanks Steve, just saw this. NO! once I had a rack down at eye level and had put a decoy on one side and walked to the other side to put a second decoy on and a hawk hit the first one while I was standing right there! Never noticed owl predation but have seen one all fall and winter sitting in my tr...

Re: Housing placement advice please

Thanks Steve, I have also done the perimeter decoy. Have some Martin and Dove decoys I set on wood fence. No way to say how many it helps but had the same philosophy. I wonder if the decoys might catch the eye of high flyers and actually bring them in was one of my thoughts. Yes mine are Coopers als...

Re: Housing placement advice please

I measured and the poles are exactly 20 feet apart which makes gourd to gourd about 16 feet.
I've wondered if moving them closer together might give the inside nests some protection.

Also measured and one tree was only 20 feet from the gourds on it's side, so I hope I can help a lot

Housing placement advice please

I currently have three Gemini racks and usually have 70 something pairs. The last three years Hawk predation has become horrible. i've been on this property 25 years and the trees are slowly encroaching on my housing. This winter I want to re do the three racks to maximize protection. I read the 40'...

cool thing I'd never seen before

One evening in mid April, most of the birds were already in housing but a group of about 30 were out and stayed out till it was so dark I could barely make them out. They were flying back and forth in an elliptical pattern probably about 50 yards by 20 yards very close to their housing and 30-50 fee...

Re: Snakes!!!

In past I've tried using a silicon spray to make the metal pole guard slick and placed some granules of "snake away" around the base. we had had a bunch of rain when my snake was caught so not sure if those would have been much good.

Re: Snakes!!!

Me too!!!! For first time in 23 years I had a big rat snake in a Bo 11 gourd and 5 20 day old babies were gone. I've tried netting in past, but I struggled with keeping it from getting in the way of raising gourds up and down. I've done it off and on several years but never caught a snake in one and...
